Airway management

Airway management is the process of reviewing, planning, and implementing a variety of medical procedures and devices to maintain or restore a safe and effective oxygenation and breathing pathway. Patients with airway obstruction, respiratory failure, or who require airway protection should undergo these procedures.

Airway management techniques, including positioning, supplementary oxygen, and bag-mask ventilation with or without adjuncts, are the most critical first steps. Advanced respiratory systems, such as supraglottic devices, endotracheal tubes, and surgical airway devices, are often used in patients with substantial or persistent airway challenges.
